The Astronaut is an object in a space suit, which slowly flies back and forth in the sky above the Bright Moon Cottage. It appears at the cottage's roof when the player spawns at the location, and immediately starts to slowly float away. Eventually, the astronaut will return to the roof, and then the cycle will repeat. This object produces a quiet trumpet noise, which gets louder as it approaches.
The landing event[]
On extremely rare occasions, the Astronaut may suddenly change its direction from its regular path and fly down into the yard, stopping then at the right side of the bar, where it becomes linkable. Linking with the astronaut at any point, even modifying your position to touch it while it's in the air, will always link the player to the Black Space.
Research Info[]
The Landing Event happens when rating marker of the background chart lands on any cell of the Upper Dynamic (pink) link zone (see the picture provided), or on any cell of the top row of the Dynamic (black) link zone (cells [x=4~9; y=3~9]) and stays there upon and after the Astronaut's spawn.
It means that the background chart's marker should be inside of the boundaries of the pink link zone, or inside the top row of the black link zone (4~9;3~9), when the link to the Bright Moon Cottage is entirely completed and the Astronaut had already spawned. If these conditions won't change during the first second after the Astronaut's spawn, the Landing Event will be launched immediately; the Astronaut will start its descent right upon spawning. If the Astronaut continues to fly away, there's no need to wait for the event to happen, it won't ever start in such dream anyway. The landing event is also completely impossible in dreams which have started in the Bright Moon Cottage, as there are no possible event value mix which will send the chart's marker to the pink/black link zone.
Details[]
The Landing Event happens rather commonly after the pink link leading to the Bright Moon Cottage on any B-type dream, especially if the pink link was caused by the Gray Man's trigger. It happens so, because there is usually quite enough space for the marker to move inside the pink link zone of the background chart, and not to fall out of it.
It is notable, that Bright Moon Cottage area load and the Astronaut's spawn itself has their own chart influence values applied to them (the Astronaut has the influence value of (0;2))[1]. It means, that there will always be a chance of the background chart's marker "falling out" from the pink link zone, right when the link to the Bright Moon Cottage is being completed, and right before, or even after the spawn of the Astronaut itself (for example, triggering the Doubleface during the first second after the Astronaut's spawn will almost certainly prevent the upcoming landing event from happening). This is the reason that the Landing Event cannot be guaranteed after the pink/black link; at the same time, on extremely rare occasions, the Landing Event may even be possible after the blue/white link, as these link zones on the background chart are nested right next to the pink link zone, and Bright Moon Cottage's influence may move the marker from the blue/white link zone right to the cells of pink link zone upon the Astronaut's spawn, causing the Landing Event to be activated.
Forced Landing Problem[]
Currently, the reliable way to cause guaranteed Landing Event is being searched for. All previous known ways included extreme timer influence applied to the Dynamic Links (on Day 004 The Natural World & Happy Town have a timer influence applied to any dynamic link) which makes it extremely hard to replicate twice. Certain timings may even be completely impossible to perform on certain devices/emulators, as the emulation speed differs from device to device. The current goal is to find a dream generation in which there's no timer influence applied to any dynamic link in the needed chain of links.
At the current moment, it seems like the task is impossible: the game weirdly refuses to send the player to the Bright Moon Cottage, unless there was a link with the timer dependence made on a given dream before (it may be the part of Gray Man's spawn logic). Even if the player was successfully linked to the Bright Moon Cottage with the pink link, the chart's marker seems to always fall off from the event activation zone. It may simply be completely impossible due to timer dependence being compulsory for the needed link to the Bright Moon Cottage.
Facts & Trivia[]
- The earliest day you can spot the Astronaut and its landing event is Day 004.
- The Astronaut's trumpet noise uses the same audio as the trumpeters from Happy Town, slowed down to 0.25x speed.
- The Astronaut's helmet viewport seems to be a ceiling texture from the library room of the Bright Moon Cottage.
- The Astronaut appears only on B-type days, and only once per dream, so after revisiting the Bright Moon Cottage the astronaut will be missing. This is the main reason the landing event being so rare.
- For some reason, the astronaut's trombone sound is being muted when the player observes the astronaut when it is landed, however, if the player is on upper floors of the Bright Moon Cottage and the astronaut is not visible to the player, the landed astronaut will continue to produce its typical sound. It is very likely to be intended by the developers: such mechanic prevents the player from noticing the missing sound of the astronaut, thereby noticing the landing event, while the outside of the cottage is invisible to the player.
Hacking information[]
Further hacking of the files within LSD itself (done by the hacking community) has found a few things:
- If you modify your position with the Software tools, this will also link you to the Black Space. This will get you into the normally inaccessible branch of dream generations, which is completely impossible on the native PlayStation device.
- The trombone and trumpet use the same audio file, with the trumpet simply being pitched down to give it the trombone-like sound.
Speculation[]
- The astronaut descending into the bar may symbolise astronauts' rare weekends, when they return from the space and finally able to have a rest.
